Police have not confirmed a serial killer, but they said the similarities between the cases are troubling enough to trigger a public warning. Authorities advised women in parts of Johannesburg and nearby areas to take extra care, especially when jogging or carrying out similar activities. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said the deaths of the young women should not be in vain, while President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered police to make the matter a priority.

The victims’ cases include a 37-year-old woman found naked and bound with cable ties on July 15, a 32-year-old found partially clothed on August 24, a 38-year-old jogger whose body was later found behind a hotel, and another woman whose body was recovered near the Tembisa township on September 7. Another body was found in Kwa-Thema township on Tuesday. One suspect has already been arrested in an earlier case, but police say they are still determining whether one person or a group is responsible.

The investigation comes against the backdrop of high levels of violence against women in South Africa, a long-running national concern.
