South Africa reappoint Mosimane as head coach

Pitso Mosimane has been reappointed as head coach of South Africa’s men’s national football team, returning to the job more than 14 years after his first spell ended. BBC Sport reported that the 62-year-old replaces Hugo Broos, whose five-year tenure finished when his contract expired at the end of July. Mosimane’s appointment was approved by the South Africa Football Association’s executive committee on 8 August, and he was later presented in Johannesburg after his contract and technical staff arrangements were completed.

Mosimane previously led Bafana Bafana from July 2010 to June 2012. During that period, South Africa missed out on the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and he left following a 1-1 draw with Ethiopia in the opening qualifier for the 2014 World Cup. BBC Sport noted that the length of his new deal has not yet been disclosed.

The move comes after a period of mixed results and progress for South African football. Under Broos, the team finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and reached the last 32 at this year’s World Cup, returning to the tournament for the first time since 2010. Mosimane has since built a strong club coaching record, including success with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, where he won the African Champions League three times, and more recent roles in Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Iran.
