What the report says

South Africa’s police service is investigating about 14 election-related cases as the country’s 2026 local government elections continue, according to SAnews.gov.za, which AllAfrica republished. The reported cases include theft, intimidation and disputes tied to political party posters, with police also looking into alleged theft of ballot papers and clashes involving party members.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said the investigations are taking place while officers provide security around voting. He spoke at the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s Results Operations Centre in Midrand on Wednesday, and said police are also handling serious unrelated crimes reported in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. He identified parts of eThekwini and uMkhanyakude in KwaZulu-Natal, along with areas in the Eastern and Western Cape, as election hotspots.

Despite those incidents, Masemola said the election process has generally remained peaceful. He cited one protest in Amathole District Municipality over water grievances, which police dispersed so voting could continue. He also reminded officers to stay politically neutral while on duty.

In a separate appeal, Presidency Director-General Phindile Baleni urged South Africans to use their remaining time to vote, saying local government decisions affect essential services such as water, electricity, roads and local development. The broader context is that local elections often draw attention to service delivery and community tensions, making security and orderly voting especially important.
