What the report says

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said provincial authorities have shut down 20 liquor outlets as part of a broader crackdown on alcohol-related violence and gender-based violence in South Africa’s most populous province. The measures were announced in Johannesburg on 1 November, according to the AllAfrica-distributed Scrolla report, which said police and inspectors had already completed 7,322 inspections at liquor businesses.

The province also issued 459 notices to non-compliant businesses, referred 566 outlets for further inspection, and carried out 41 joint operations targeting liquor traders. Lesufi said enforcement would continue against unlicensed taverns, repeat offenders and venues selling alcohol outside allowed hours. He linked the campaign to national pressure to accelerate action on rape, murder and other serious crimes affecting women and children.

Gauteng has identified 122 high-risk areas where 1,022 response teams will be deployed, and 10 police stations with high rape caseloads will receive special attention, including Rietgat, Alexandra, Mamelodi, Diepsloot, Ivory Park, Dobsonville, Midrand and Tembisa. The province also plans to add 56 social workers, bolster victim support facilities and strengthen forensic and court-related systems. In a broader safety drive, municipalities are clearing danger zones and repairing public infrastructure, while officials say weekly monitoring will track progress on outstanding anti-violence measures.
