South Africa: Four Huge Cases Collide in Gauteng's Courts Today

The cases involve North West businessman Brown Mogotsi’s bail appeal, an attempted murder matter linked to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, the killing of radio personality Warrick “DJ Warras” Stock, and the murder trial over Johannesburg teacher Kirsten Kluyts.

In the Johannesburg High Court, Mogotsi is seeking to overturn a lower court’s refusal to grant bail. According to the report, two earlier bail bids failed after concerns were raised about details of his residential address. His legal team argued on Friday, and the High Court was expected to rule by Thursday.

The Matlala case is also continuing in the Johannesburg High Court through a “trial within a trial,” a hearing used to decide whether disputed evidence may be used in the main proceedings. Scrolla reported that former security officer Christiaan Sheppard was expected to remain under cross-examination, while the court considers whether firearms and cellphone records linked to the arrest of alleged hitman Musa Kekana can be admitted.

The DJ Warras case involves Victor Majola and Armindo Joaquim Pacula, who remain in custody after Stock was shot near Johannesburg’s Carlton Centre in December last year. Separately, Bafana Mahungela is on trial over Kluyts’ kidnapping, robbery and murder after she disappeared during a Sandton park run in October 2023. He has pleaded not guilty. The clustering of these hearings underscores a heavy day for Gauteng’s criminal courts and keeps several closely watched cases in the public eye.
