AllAfrica republished a GroundUp investigation by freelancer Joel Cedras describing how he deliberately entered a social media job scam to document its methods. The report, dated 27 July 2026 from Cape Town, says the scheme was advertised on TikTok as work linked to Amazon, then shifted through WhatsApp and Telegram contacts who presented themselves as human resources staff, mentors and supervisors. Cedras says he ultimately lost nearly R4,000 while tracing the operation to a wider network of scam sites linked to China, with people involved or targeted across several countries.

According to GroundUp, the scam offered quick earnings for “processing orders” on an online platform. Cedras was first asked to register, move to Telegram, pay a R100 “VIP” deposit and complete simple tasks. A small payout of R144 then arrived in his bank account, which the report says appeared designed to build trust. The demands then escalated: higher “VIP” levels and so-called high-commission orders required further payments of R200, R422, R888 and R2,233 to bank accounts described in the article as money mule accounts at Standard Bank and ABSA.

The article says Cedras stopped when the platform demanded another R12,666 to unlock a promised R33,407 commission. GroundUp reported that the Telegram channel used by the scammers had more than 100,000 followers, underscoring the scale and reach of such schemes.

GroundUp also reported difficulties in seeking help afterward. Cedras said Standard Bank told him to open a police case and provide an affidavit, while police initially sent him away for bank statements and later said he was at the wrong station. The account highlights how online fraud can exploit unemployment, social media advertising and weak follow-up systems.
