South Africa: Anti Corruption Boss Quits After Madlanga Commission Grilling

AllAfrica, carrying a Scrolla report from Johannesburg, reported that Advocate Andrea Johnson has resigned immediately as head of South Africa’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC). The Presidency said on Monday, 27 July 2026, that President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted the resignation after a recommendation from Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, supported by National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Jan Lekgoa “Andy” Mothibi.

According to the report, Johnson said the controversy surrounding her had become harmful to IDAC and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). In her resignation letter, she described the past five months as the hardest period of her career and said personal and professional criticism had created reputational risk for both institutions. She asked that her three-month notice period be waived and said she had already sought retirement after about three decades at the NPA.

The resignation followed Johnson’s appearance before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where she acknowledged errors linked to IDAC matters. Scrolla reported that she withdrew a comment about Brigadier Dineo Mokwele after conceding she had not reviewed Mokwele’s qualifications, and accepted that IDAC lacked legal authority to investigate Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo in one matter. She also said the unit should not have invited public complaints to initiate one investigation.

The report said the Office of the IDAC Oversight Judge had received formal complaints against Johnson, while Public Interest SA and Brigadier Mokwele submitted separate complaints to the Legal Practice Council and the IDAC Ombud. IDAC, created in 2024 within the NPA, is tasked with pursuing serious corruption, organised crime and major financial crime cases, making its leadership important to South Africa’s anti-corruption efforts.
