South Africa: Andrea Johnson Requests Immediate Release From IDAC Post

What the report says
AllAfrica, carrying a Daily Maverick report by Reitumetse Pilane dated 27 July 2026, reported that Andrea Johnson, head of South Africa’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, has asked to leave her role immediately. According to the report, Johnson wrote to National Director of Public Prosecutions Andy Mothibi and also approached President Cyril Ramaphosa, seeking to be released without serving the usual three-month notice period.
Daily Maverick reported that Johnson asked to vacate the office within 24 hours, arguing in her letter that a swift departure would be in the best interests of the relevant institutions and the country. The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed that Mothibi had received the correspondence and was dealing with it. The report said the Presidency and Johnson had not replied to requests for comment before publication.
The development comes as Johnson was expected to resume testimony before the Madlanga Commission on Monday. The article says commissioners had spent three days questioning her about claims that she allowed Major General Feroz Khan, the suspended deputy head of Crime Intelligence, to access an assault and intimidation docket before he provided a warning statement.
The matter referenced in the commission proceedings relates to a case reportedly opened by Brigadier Leonora Phetlhe after an altercation at Crime Intelligence headquarters in 2018. Daily Maverick said her statement was taken at Silverton Police Station and that a J88 medical report was completed. The request for Johnson’s immediate release is significant because Idac is a key anti-corruption body within South Africa’s prosecutorial system, and leadership changes there may affect public confidence and institutional continuity while sensitive inquiries are under way.
