Soroti University’s Shs1.2bn Gate Signals Wider Infrastructure Expansion

Soroti University has commissioned a Shs1.2 billion main gate fitted with surveillance and other security infrastructure, in a project the university says is part of a broader push to expand campus facilities. According to Nile Post, the gate was built by the National Housing and Construction Company and includes a perimeter wall, cameras, solar installations and communication systems. University officials said the work began in September 2025 and was funded by the Government of Uganda.

The handover comes as the public university, which started admitting students in 2019, faces growing pressure for more space and services. Management says student accommodation is an immediate concern, with some learners unable to find housing nearby. It is also considering a housing project of about 2,000 beds, including a smaller block for medical students who will be attached to a planned hospital.

Beyond the gate, Soroti University is looking at larger long-term projects, including a proposed hospital, a central teaching facility that could serve 2,000 to 3,000 students, and a School of Engineering and Technology. The university says the new entrance improves access control and gives the campus a clearer identity, while students welcomed the reopening after the old gate was closed during construction. The project also enters a six-month defects liability period, during which the contractor is expected to fix any issues identified.
