Sean Grayson, the former Illinois police officer convicted of killing Sonya Massey, has died in prison at the age of 32, according to BBC World News. Grayson was found guilty last year of second-degree murder for the shooting of Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman, during an encounter at her home in Springfield, Illinois, in July 2024. The killing drew national attention and renewed debate over police brutality in the United States. It triggered protests across the country and led then-President Joe Biden to say Massey “should be alive today,” according to the BBC. Grayson was dismissed from his job, charged initially with first-degree murder, and later sentenced to 20 years in prison. His death comes after a failed request for medical release earlier this year.

Lawyers for Massey’s family said Grayson’s death does not change the loss they suffered, while offering condolences to his relatives, the BBC reported.
