Sony’s PlayStation Disc Shutdown Draws Ubisoft’s Verdict, as CFO Bets Cheaper Digital Machines Beat the Used-Game Fallout - Wccftech

What the report says
Wccftech reported that Ubisoft Chief Financial Officer Frédérick Duguet addressed Sony’s planned move away from new PlayStation disc production during Ubisoft’s Q1 2026 earnings call. The discussion came more than three weeks after Sony’s announcement that it would stop producing new PlayStation discs from January 2028, a decision that continues to draw responses from game companies.
According to Wccftech, investors asked Ubisoft whether the loss of a used-game market could hurt demand, since players would no longer be able to rely on second-hand physical copies. Duguet’s response was that Ubisoft does not expect a major disruption. He pointed to the PC market as an example where digital distribution contributed to growth, and argued that consoles designed only for digital games could become cheaper, making hardware more accessible despite drawbacks for resale and physical ownership.
The report also covered Ubisoft’s broader earnings update. Wccftech said Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has sold 3.5 million units and exceeded annual expectations within its first two weeks. Ubisoft’s overall net bookings, however, were down 9% year over year, which the company attributed to a difficult comparison with the prior year’s quarter, when Assassin’s Creed Shadows launched.
Duguet did not revise Ubisoft’s full-year outlook, saying it was still early despite the strong start for Black Flag Resynced. The issue matters because Sony’s shift could reshape console pricing, retail sales, game preservation and consumer access, while publishers weigh any loss of used-disc activity against potentially wider adoption of lower-cost digital hardware.
