Sony FX5 vs. FX3 Compared by Claudio Miranda, ASC - Y.M.Cinema Magazine

What the report says
YMCinema Magazine reported on July 28, 2026, that Sony has released a camera test in which Academy Award-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC, ACC, compares the Sony FX5 with the FX3, using the VENICE 2 as the image-quality benchmark. The report says Miranda evaluated the cameras for exposure handling, color response, menus, image behavior and on-set usability, with the VENICE 2 serving as a reference rather than a product being replaced.
According to YMCinema, Miranda returned to a familiar test location with difficult lighting conditions, including bright reflections from chrome, dark car interiors, shadows, night skies, headlights, firelight and varied skin tones. In the daytime setup, the article says no bounce cards or added interior lighting were used, creating a direct challenge for dynamic range. Miranda found the FX5 closer to the VENICE look than the FX3, particularly in highlight roll-off and smoother color transitions.
The report says the nighttime test used practical sources such as headlights, a campfire and distant city lights, without additional lighting. Miranda was described as impressed by the FX5’s low-light performance, especially how it moved into deep blacks without the reddish or muddy shadow contamination he associates with some cameras. He also praised its handling of skin tones near firelight and its ability to keep usable information across faces, flame, sky and background.
YMCinema framed the test as evidence of where Sony is positioning the FX5 within its Cinema Line: not merely as an FX3 update, but as a compact camera with more VENICE-like color, highlights, shadows and workflow. The article also notes an important limitation: the test was produced by Sony, so it should not be treated as an independent lab comparison.
