Sons of immigrant killed by ICE in Texas share grief, demand accountability

What the report says
Al Jazeera, citing Associated Press reporting, said the sons of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo appeared at a Houston hearing on Friday with Democratic members of Congress to call for a transparent investigation into their father’s death. Salgado Araujo, 52, was fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents during a traffic stop in Houston on July 13, 2026, according to the report. His sons described their grief and said their father had worked to care for and support his family.
Family members told the hearing that Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant who had lived in the United States for more than three decades without legal status, was not the target of the ICE operation. One son said the family first learned through social media that their father had been shot. Al Jazeera reported that a memorial has formed at the site and that the killing has drawn large protests in Houston.
Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare told lawmakers that the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, had not provided requested information and evidence, including the identity of the officer who fired. The report said three passengers, among them Salgado Araujo’s brother, were detained during the stop. Officials initially said Salgado Araujo used his vehicle against agents, but Al Jazeera reported that witnesses have challenged that account and that the agents were not wearing body cameras.
The case has become part of a broader political fight over immigration enforcement. Democratic lawmakers at the forum signalled interest in investigating ICE and changing the agency if their party gains power in Congress, while the report noted other recent fatal shootings involving federal immigration agents.
