What the report says

BBC Africa reports that Eno Mwamba, the son of Zambian opposition politician and former bishop Trevor Mwamba, says he fears for his father’s safety after Mwamba was detained by authorities following Zambia’s disputed election. Trevor Mwamba leads the United National Independence Party and, according to the report, was among 11 opposition figures taken into custody after a security raid on 14 August.

The BBC says the detained group has been charged with treason. Eno Mwamba told the broadcaster that his father has been held since the post-election operation, and that the family is worried about his welfare. The report links the arrests to the political tensions that followed President Hakainde Hichilema’s election victory.

BBC Africa also reports that opposition leader Brian Mundubile, who heads the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity, had earlier gone into hiding after challenging the result but has since also been detained. The government has accused the opposition figures of planning an armed insurgency, while the detainees have denied the allegations.

The case highlights the sharp escalation in Zambia’s post-election dispute and raises concerns about the treatment of opposition leaders. More broadly, treason cases involving political opponents can deepen instability and intensify scrutiny of the government’s response to dissent.
