Somalia: Taiwan Provides $1 Million for Somaliland Dialysis Services

What the report says
Taiwan has provided Somaliland with $1 million to support hemodialysis equipment and services, according to Horn Diplomat’s report distributed by AllAfrica. The funding is intended to expand access to kidney treatment for patients across Somaliland, where dialysis services are limited and demand is significant. The handover took place in Hargeisa, the capital, at a ceremony involving Taiwanese representative Allen C. Lou and senior Somaliland officials.
Among those present were the state minister for finance and economic development, the deputy health minister, and the director general of Hargeisa Group Hospital. The Somaliland government said the assistance should help improve the availability and quality of dialysis care at hospitals around the country. Taiwan’s representative office described the money as part of its wider support for patients needing kidney treatment.
After the ceremony, Lou and his delegation met Somaliland Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, who was acting president. Aw Abdi thanked Taiwan for its ongoing backing, especially in healthcare and development. Lou said Taiwan would continue supporting Somaliland in areas including health, technology, agriculture, security, social development and infrastructure. The report also noted that Somaliland and Taiwan established representative offices in each other’s capitals in 2020 and have since deepened cooperation in several sectors.
