Somalia: Supreme Court Annuls Galmudug Election Results

Somalia’s Federal Supreme Court has annulled the results of Galmudug’s July 30 election, ruling that the vote did not comply with the constitution and electoral law. Chief Justice Bashe Yusuf Ahmed announced the decision in Mogadishu on Monday, according to Radio Dalsan’s report carried by AllAfrica.

The court said the violations were serious enough that they could not be corrected without voiding the entire process. It also ordered Somalia’s electoral commission to organize a new election that follows the constitution, the electoral law and related procedures. Until a rerun is held, current Galmudug officials will remain in office to avoid a gap in local governance.

The annulment is significant because the July vote was Galmudug’s first direct election and a key test of Somalia’s broader push toward one-person, one-vote elections. The election covered 11 districts in the Mudug and Galgaduud regions, and the report says the process had already been marked by months of tension between federal officials and Galmudug leaders, as well as questions about the independence of the election body.

More broadly, the decision adds pressure to Somalia’s federal-state relations at a time when the country is preparing for national elections. It also raises uncertainty about how quickly direct voting can be expanded beyond Galmudug and other early pilot efforts.
