Somalia: Somaliland Launches 'Heegan 2026' Military Drills Involving Tanks and Drones

What the report says
Somaliland’s army has begun a military exercise called “Heegan 2026” in Benderwanaag, according to a report distributed by AllAfrica from Horn Diplomat. The drills were launched on Oct. 28 and are being led by Army Commander Brigadier General Nimcaan Yuusuf Gaaxnuug. The exercise includes live-fire training, tanks, artillery and drones, with the goal of improving readiness and coordination across different army units.
The military said the training will continue over the coming weeks and will bring together multiple units for joint work with armored vehicles and other equipment. In its statement, the army described the exercise as part of an effort to raise operational standards, strengthen cooperation and test the force’s ability to carry out combined operations. The command also said it wants the drills to become an annual event so training can keep pace with evolving warfare tactics.
Gaaxnuug said regular training and coordination are important for defending the country, protecting sovereignty and maintaining national security, according to the military statement. The army also issued a safety notice to people in Benderwanaag and nearby areas, warning that gunfire, artillery noise and troop movements would occur during the exercise. Residents, especially pastoralists, were told to stay away from firing zones and follow military guidance.
The drill matters because it offers a glimpse into how Somaliland’s military is trying to modernize training and demonstrate preparedness, while also managing civilian safety in nearby communities.
