Somalia: Brigadier General Ivan Falasca Formally Assumes Command of the European Union Training Mission in Somalia

What the report says
Brigadier General Ivan Falasca has formally taken command of the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM Somalia), replacing Brigadier General Elio Manes at a change-of-command ceremony in Mogadishu, according to Shabelle via AllAfrica. The ceremony took place on 1 October 2026 and was presided over by Lieutenant General Michiel van der Laan, director of the EU Military Planning and Conduct Capability.
The event was attended by Somalia’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud, as well as ambassadors, mission heads, Somali civilian and military officials, and representatives of international partners and organisations. During the handover, Manes received the CSDP Medal for Extraordinary Meritorious Service in recognition of his contribution to peace, security and stability in Somalia.
The report says EUTM Somalia expanded its advising, training and mentoring work during Manes’ tenure. It delivered 18 courses and seminars in areas including security, healthcare, information technology, engineering and maritime security, involving Somali and AUSSOM personnel with international partners. It also resumed activities at its training area after operating-cost problems were resolved. Between January and September 2026, the mission coordinated or supported 11 training events for 626 participants. The mission said it will continue supporting Somali security institutions and promoting local ownership of national capabilities.
