In Nakapiripirit District, a solar-powered irrigation project is helping households in Karamoja grow food year-round despite worsening drought and repeated crop failures, according to Nile Post. The scheme, operating in Kawach Sub-county, has turned previously dry land into vegetable gardens and is being presented as a practical response to chronic hunger in one of Uganda’s most climate-vulnerable regions.

The project was developed by Innovation: Africa and provides water for irrigation, livestock and household use. Nile Post reported that the system is intended to address the region’s unreliable water access, which has long undermined farming and daily life. Local officials and residents said the new water supply is improving food production, reducing time spent searching for water and helping families become more resilient during dry periods.

The article said Karamoja has faced repeated droughts, failed harvests and livestock losses over the past decade, with many communities depending on humanitarian food aid. It also noted that climate change is increasing the pressure on semi-arid areas and making irrigation a more important adaptation tool. Similar solar water projects have also been introduced in parts of Nakapiripirit and nearby Nabilatuk districts.

According to the district’s chief administrative officer, expanding such systems could significantly reduce food insecurity and support household incomes. The report frames the initiative as a locally visible example of how reliable water access can improve food security and livelihoods in a region often hit by hunger crises.
