Socialite Don Chris arrested over alleged fake jobs scheme

Police in Uganda have arrested Christian Asiimwe, widely known as Don Chris, in connection with allegations that he defrauded people seeking jobs abroad. Sqoop Uganda reported that Asiimwe, a former director of the now defunct labour recruitment firm Sky Pins, was taken into custody early Thursday from a bar in Zana, in Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District. The arrest was confirmed by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala.

According to police allegations cited by Sqoop Uganda, the suspected scheme ran between 2022 and 2025. Applicants were said to have been promised work in countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Qatar and Dubai, with roles such as waiters, cleaners and caregivers. Police say more than 500 people have so far come forward claiming they were affected.

The article says victims were reportedly asked to pay between Shs5 million and Shs10 million, depending on the job and destination. Police said Asiimwe remains in custody while investigations continue and that he will be brought before court after the probe is complete. Authorities also used the case to warn Ugandans to verify that labour recruiters and agents are properly licensed before paying money or signing agreements.

More broadly, the case reflects ongoing concerns in Uganda and elsewhere about illegal overseas recruitment schemes targeting job seekers with promises of foreign employment. Sqoop Uganda said police are asking anyone with useful information to contact the nearest station.
