Six Kapchorwa officials arrested over alleged corruption, abuse of office

The Independent Uganda reported that six senior officials in Kapchorwa District were arrested on allegations including corruption, abuse of office, financial loss and poor management of government projects. Those named in the report include the chief administrative officer, the district health officer, the district engineer and the town clerk of Kapchorwa Municipality. The arrests were carried out by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit after complaints from residents, local leaders and other stakeholders about public service delivery and the handling of public funds.

According to the report, the action followed an accountability meeting in Kapchorwa led by Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi under the government’s “Expose the Corrupt” campaign. The meeting focused on alleged problems in roads, health facilities, recruitment by the District Service Commission and the use of government money. Residents raised concerns that some projects were poorly executed even after payment, while officials were questioned over decisions related to recruitment, project supervision and a generator auctioned at a health centre.

The article said the minister instructed security agencies to investigate the matters further and rejected suggestions that the arrests were a witch-hunt. He said public officials must answer for the resources they manage. The report also said similar action had recently been taken in nearby Bukwo and Kween districts, showing a wider anti-corruption drive across the Sebei sub-region.
