Six dead and others injured in fire at New York City building

What the report says
Six people died and several others were injured after a large fire tore through a residential building in Brooklyn, New York City, according to BBC World News. The blaze broke out early Thursday morning near Sunset Park, with the first report to emergency services coming at about 01:40 local time. The New York City Fire Department said more than 230 fire and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene.
Officials said four victims were pronounced dead at the building, while a man and a woman later died at hospital. Six civilians were injured, including two described as critically hurt, and three firefighters were also injured, the FDNY said. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigators are still working to establish how it started.
BBC reported that a hazardous materials crew was sent because a lithium-ion battery was found at the scene, though it was not immediately clear whether it played any role in the fire. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he was heartbroken by the deaths and urged residents to keep the injured in their thoughts. The incident highlights ongoing concern in New York and other cities about apartment fires, building safety and the risks linked to lithium-ion batteries, although no such connection has been confirmed here.
