Sierra Leone: How Sierra Leone's Traditional Textiles Are Weaving a Modern Fashion Economy

What the report says
AllAfrica, carrying a Bird Story Agency report dated 24 July 2026, says Sierra Leone’s traditional textiles are being repositioned as part of a modern fashion economy. The report focuses on Frederica Williams, founder of Just Fabulous Heritage and president of the Fashion Design and Textiles Association (FDTA), who works from a Freetown studio with more than 20 tailors and assistants. Williams is associated with Krio Print, a contemporary fabric inspired by Creole heritage, and also uses gara cloth and country cloth in modern designs.
The report says designers, entrepreneurs and policymakers see fashion and textiles as a way to diversify an economy historically reliant on mining. Sierra Leone’s textile traditions include Krio Print, Fullah Léppi, Mende country cloth, Temne gara tie-dyes, and Ronko shirts associated with Limba and Kuranko communities. These fabrics, once largely linked to ceremonies and rituals, are increasingly being used in everyday corporate wear and export-oriented fashion.
A key development cited is the 2024 launch of the FDTA, which brings together designers, weavers, dyers, tailors, cotton producers and other businesses to coordinate the sector. Williams told the publisher the association is encouraging people to wear Sierra Leonean fashion and is lobbying Parliament for stronger intellectual property protections. Other designers mentioned include Abdulai Mansaray of His Masterpiece Collection and Stylings, and Mohamed Barrie of Fashion One Sierra Leone, both of whom are adapting traditional fabrics for contemporary buyers.
The report also highlights supply-chain challenges, especially the decline of local cotton production as farmers moved into other sectors. Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Trade and Industry says textiles and garments are priorities under local production and content policies, with possible export opportunities through AGOA, ECOWAS trade arrangements and AfCFTA.
