Shot fired outside US consulate in Canada for second time this year

Al Jazeera, citing Toronto police and Reuters, reported that at least one gunshot was fired outside the United States Consulate General in Toronto early Monday, July 27, 2026, marking the second shooting incident at the building in four months. Police said no one was hurt, but investigators found a shell casing and damage to the consulate’s exterior. Authorities said a white sedan was seen leaving the area at about 5am local time, and officers ended a brief pursuit because the vehicle was travelling at extremely high speed and posed safety risks.

No arrests had been announced, and police said the investigation remained active. Al Jazeera reported that Toronto police did not offer a theory on the motive and did not say whether the latest shooting was connected to earlier incidents. A US Department of State spokesperson said Washington was coordinating with Canadian authorities. The incident follows a March 10 shooting at the same consulate, when several shots were fired. Al Jazeera reported that a police officer was later killed during an operation to arrest those believed responsible for that earlier attack. In June, Toronto police alleged that young people in the area had been recruited through encrypted messaging platforms to shoot at targets and record the attacks for payment.

According to Al Jazeera, police previously listed synagogues, Jewish schools, a waste management company and the US consulate among the targets in that broader investigation, which involved the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the FBI. Police did not present evidence publicly and said inquiries were continuing.
