MLB Trade Rumors reported that the Athletics placed All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers on the 10-day injured list after he sustained a torn meniscus in his right knee. The transaction is retroactive to July 25, and the club recalled catcher Brian Serven from Triple-A Las Vegas. Citing ESPN’s Jeff Passan, MLBTR said Langeliers was hurt while running the bases during the Athletics’ series against the Minnesota Twins.

The injury could end Langeliers’ 2026 season, depending on whether he has surgery. MLBTR, citing Passan, reported that a typical operation for this type of meniscus tear would involve an estimated six-to-eight-week recovery. With the Athletics nine games back of a Wild Card position, the outlet noted the team may have little incentive to rush him back late in the year if surgery is required.

Langeliers’ absence is significant for an A’s team already dealing with multiple injuries. MLBTR said he had been one of the club’s top position players, hitting .263 with a .332 on-base percentage, .497 slugging mark, 23 home runs and a 127 wRC+ over 416 plate appearances. The report also noted defensive improvement, with Langeliers credited with 5 Defensive Runs Saved this season after negative totals in each of the previous two years.

In the short term, MLBTR expects Jonah Heim to take over as the primary catcher, with Serven also available. The injury could affect the Athletics’ trade-deadline plans: Heim is a pending free agent and had been viewed as a possible trade piece, while Langeliers’ own long-shot trade speculation is now effectively sidelined as the club focuses on his recovery and potential return in 2027.
