MLB Trade Rumors reported that two Athletics players, catcher Shea Langeliers and reliever Mark Leiter Jr., underwent surgery on July 28 after injuries that could significantly affect the rest of the club’s season. Citing Martín Gallegos of MLB.com, the report said Langeliers had an operation to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, while Leiter had surgery for a right hip issue that had already placed him on the injured list.

According to the report, Leiter has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. The Athletics had not provided a recovery timetable for Langeliers, though MLB Trade Rumors noted that his injury may also end his year. Langeliers had already been expected to miss most or all of the remaining schedule after the knee problem emerged over the weekend.

The loss of Langeliers is especially notable because of his production at a premium position. MLB Trade Rumors reported he had 23 home runs, second among catchers, with a .263/.332/.497 batting line over 416 plate appearances. His performance could have made him a trade target for contenders seeking catching help, but his injury makes a deadline move highly unlikely. He remains under arbitration control through 2028.

Leiter, who signed a $2.85 million free-agent deal in the offseason, had a 4.28 ERA in 33 2/3 innings and also might have drawn interest as a rental bullpen option if healthy. The report noted both players could be shifted to the 60-day injured list if the Athletics need 40-man roster space.
