Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca said several players had been asking in the final days of the transfer window whether Enzo Fernandez would arrive, as the club pursued a deadline-day move for the Argentina midfielder. BBC Sport reported that the 25-year-old joined City from Chelsea in a joint-British record deal worth £125m, after a summer in which City reshaped their midfield and added several new first-team players.

Maresca, who worked with Fernandez at Chelsea, said he expects the midfielder to be ready for a debut against Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. He described Fernandez as a winner with the mentality to help a squad that has already brought in major new signings and has also adjusted its leadership group, with Ruben Dias named captain after Bernardo Silva’s departure.

The report said City’s spending in the window reached a club record £458m, while the club also raised more than £300m through sales. BBC Sport also noted that Fernandez had spoken publicly about dreaming of joining a club the size of City, a remark that drew attention because of his recent exit from Chelsea.
