Senior One Student Feared Drowned in Lake Bunyonyi

An 18-year-old Senior One student from Lake Bunyonyi Community Vocational Secondary School is feared drowned after reportedly going swimming in Lake Bunyonyi with a friend. Nile Post reported that the student, identified as Roland Ampeire, was said to have entered the water in the Bufuka area of Mwendo Parish, Kitumba Sub-county in Kabale District around midday. A local leader told the outlet that the pair had been swimming when the incident occurred.

According to the report, Ampeire’s father said he was informed by school management after the friend allegedly relayed what happened. The account given to the school was that Ampeire had been using a closed jerrycan as a floating aid while trying to learn how to swim, but the container slipped and he lost balance. The father questioned how a boarding student could leave the school premises and go swimming without supervision or permission, and suggested closer oversight might have prevented the incident.

Local leaders said divers and swimmers were still searching for the student’s body at the time of publication. Nile Post also noted that, by press time, neither police nor the school had released an official statement. The incident has renewed concern about water safety on Lake Bunyonyi, especially for young people who may not be strong swimmers and who are not under adult supervision.
