What the report says

A security guard was found dead in a swimming pool at a residential property in Naguru, Kampala, according to The Observer. The guard, identified as 24-year-old Andrew Tumusiime, worked for SGA Security Company and had been assigned to protect a home on Plot 10, Naguru. The paper said the occupants of the house had left two days earlier, leaving Tumusiime and another guard on duty.

The colleague on the morning shift, Edison Kyaligonza, said he grew worried when Tumusiime was not at his post and his phone rang unanswered. After checking around the property, he said he heard the phone near the pool and later saw Tumusiime’s clothes and body in the water. He then contacted the security office, which alerted police. Kyaligonza said Tumusiime may have been filming himself while swimming before drowning in the deeper part of the pool.

Local leaders and residents who spoke to the paper described concern over the handling of the scene. Ahamed Matoovu, the chairperson of Kiwalimu Zone, said he was informed by police and went to the property. Najiv Ssenyange criticized the speed and manner of the police response, saying officers took too long to recover the body and secure evidence. The Observer also reported that some officers said the security company did not want the case publicized, as the property reportedly belongs to a senior Ugandan bank official.
