Security Forces Recover Illegal SMG in Nabilatuk as Karamoja Disarmament Continues

Joint security forces and district leaders in Nabilatuk District have recovered an illegal submachine gun as disarmament operations in Karamoja continue, according to Nile Post. The weapon, described as an SMG marked 092 and found without ammunition, was recovered from Angela Ngelei of Lopie Village in Lokwameri Parish, Kosike Sub-county.

Nabilatuk Resident District Commissioner Linos Lotem said Ngelei was among four warriors who were allegedly seen firing the gun as they fled from pursuing security personnel. The firearm was later handed over to the Kosike Peace Committee, a local community group involved in peacebuilding, reconciliation and efforts to encourage voluntary surrender of illegal weapons.

Karamoja police spokesperson IP Mike Longole said the recovery reflects ongoing efforts to remove illicit firearms from the region. The broader disarmament campaign remains important because illegal guns in Karamoja have been associated with cattle theft, killings and other security concerns. The report said authorities continue to urge residents to report suspected gun holders and to surrender weapons through peace and disarmament structures.
