Security forces deploy as Milan braces for another day of protests

What the report says
Italian authorities have deployed security forces in Milan ahead of another day of protests, after demonstrations there last weekend escalated into clashes with police and looting, according to Al Jazeera. The government said it was sending 500 soldiers to the city, which is Italy’s financial centre, as a precaution before expected unrest linked to anger over the rising cost of living and deteriorating public services.
Al Jazeera reports that protests were called for Saturday in eight Italian cities against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government. A newly formed group calling itself the October 17 Movement has emerged as a leading force behind the demonstrations, alongside student groups, grassroots unions and antiwar coalitions. The group said on social media that it wanted peaceful protest, even as authorities prepared for possible disorder.
Police have also taken action in connection with last weekend’s violence. According to the article, raids and searches were carried out in several cities on Friday and another 150 searches took place in Lombardy on Saturday morning. Al Jazeera said police were questioning the administrator of the movement’s Instagram page, while Italian media reported that he is under investigation on suspicion of inciting crimes.
The unrest comes amid broader social tensions in Italy. Al Jazeera noted that many of those arrested in the previous protests were teenagers, and that officials have blamed social media for drawing young people into the violence. Separate protests by truck drivers over fuel prices have also disrupted supplies in parts of southern Italy, adding to the pressure on the government.
