SC Villa captain Owori killed in street robbery

The Observer reports that Uganda’s football community is grieving the deaths of SC Villa captain David Owori and Masaza Cup player Rogers Ssebyondya in separate incidents. Owori was attacked on Tuesday night while returning home in Makindye Division, Kampala, near his residence. According to the article, assailants struck him with paving stones, robbed him and left him unconscious. He was taken first to a nearby clinic and then to Case Clinic, where he later died from his injuries.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said police had opened an investigation and were pursuing the attackers, but had not yet established the full circumstances of the assault or what was taken. SC Villa said Owori was a respected captain and described the killing as a major loss for the club and the wider football fraternity. The club also called on security agencies to quickly find those responsible.

The report also says Bulemezi County forward Rogers Ssebyondya died after sustaining serious injuries in a Masaza Cup match against Kyagwe County. Bulemezi official Emma Mugere said he collided in the air with the goalkeeper while challenging for the ball and landed badly. He was taken to hospital and later referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he died before surgery. The double loss has deepened shock in Ugandan football, particularly because both men were active players in local competitions.
