Business Insider aviation reporters Taylor Rains and Pete Syme reported after touring an Emirates Airbus A350-900 at the Farnborough Airshow in the UK that the airline’s new U-Dream economy headrest may reduce the need for travelers to bring neck pillows. Emirates unveiled the feature on Monday, and Business Insider said its reporters tried it during the airshow visit.

The headrest has adjustable side panels that fold inward and downward to hold a passenger’s head more securely, with vertical movement and tilt intended to fit different body types. Emirates President Tim Clark said in a company release cited by Business Insider that the design supports the neck for passengers trying to sleep. The feature is currently installed on three Airbus A350s, with Emirates planning to add it to all 25 of its A350s by the end of the year. The airline also plans to begin installing the headrests on most of its Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft from 2027.

Business Insider highlighted other economy-cabin features on the A350, including 3-3-3 seating, 31 to 32 inches of seat pitch, electronic window shades, 4K inflight entertainment screens and Bluetooth connectivity for passengers using their own wireless headphones. The article framed these additions as notable at a time when many airline product upgrades focus on premium cabins.

The development matters because Emirates relies heavily on long-haul connecting traffic through Dubai, where economy comfort can influence airline choice. Business Insider noted that Emirates also faces competition from other Gulf carriers with similar hub-and-spoke networks.
