The Verge reviewed Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, describing the new foldable as a significant shift in Samsung’s approach to book-style phones. Reviewer Dominic Preston wrote that the device initially looks strange because of its shorter, wider outer display, but said it became comfortable after several days of use. Samsung is positioning the model as the standard Galaxy Z Fold rather than a niche variant, suggesting the company sees this wider format as central to its foldable lineup.

According to The Verge, the Z Fold 8 has a 5.5-inch outer screen with a 10:16 aspect ratio and opens to a 7.6-inch inner display with a 4:3 shape, similar to many tablets. The review said that layout makes the phone more useful for reading and video than earlier Z Fold models, though some apps and even Samsung’s own quick settings can require extra scrolling or display awkwardly on the unusual cover screen.

The publication gave the phone an 8 out of 10 and listed strengths including comfortable closed use, a better inner screen for media, strong battery life and Samsung’s lightest Z Fold design yet. It also highlighted drawbacks: the $1,899 device drops to two rear cameras, lacks a telephoto camera, still does not have an IP68 rating, and only offers IP48 protection.

The review matters because Samsung remains one of the companies defining the foldable phone market. The Verge noted that Apple is rumored to be preparing a similarly squat foldable iPhone, but said the market’s direction will be clearer only if Apple enters the category.
