What the report says

NBC 7 San Diego, citing City News Service and county officials, reported that San Diego County public health authorities are investigating a Salmonella outbreak tied to Ramona Family Naturals Market, a deli and market in Ramona. The county announced the investigation Tuesday, with 13 confirmed and probable illnesses reported since June 21.

According to the report, the people who became sick are between 27 and 60 years old, and four required hospitalization. County investigators believe the likely source is mayonnaise prepared with raw, unpasteurized eggs. The market owner has been cooperating with the county’s Environmental Health and Quality division and Public Health Services, and the deli has stopped using raw, unpasteurized eggs in its food products.

NBC 7 reported that officials said this Salmonella strain is separate from a Midwest outbreak linked to shell eggs. Salmonella infection can cause gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Symptoms often appear within 12 to 72 hours after contaminated food is consumed and may last several days; while many people recover without medical treatment, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face higher risk of complications.

County officials advised anyone who ate food from Ramona Family Naturals Market or its deli and developed symptoms to contact a healthcare provider. People who are currently sick or have recovered after eating there can also report their illness to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality by phone at 858-505-6814, through a form, or by email at fhdepi@sdcounty.ca.gov.
