S.4 student dies after ambulance overturns in Agago

What the report says
A senior four student from Patongo Seed School, Akidi Janet Apat, has died after the ambulance carrying her to a referral hospital overturned in Agago district, according to The Observer. The report says she had been taken first to Patongo Health Centre IV after falling ill before her UCE examinations, but health workers decided she was too unwell to sit for the tests and referred her onward for specialised treatment.
The crash happened at Olung Trading Centre in Lokole Sub-county while the ambulance was en route to Dr Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital in Kalongo. A teacher at the school said the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming motorcyclist. Apat suffered a head injury and later died at the hospital on Tuesday. The school matron who accompanied her was also injured and remained admitted, while the nurse and driver in the ambulance were reported to have sustained serious injuries and complications.
Agago District Health Officer Dr Kimton Opiyo confirmed the accident and identified the ambulance as one attached to Patongo Health Centre IV. He said the district depends heavily on ambulance transport because it serves a wide area with more than 43 health facilities, and that staffing shortages already make referrals difficult. The vehicle involved had been donated by UNICEF in partnership with KOICA.
The accident leaves Agago with only one ambulance for its health facilities, increasing concern about emergency response and the transfer of critically ill patients from remote communities. The report highlights broader pressure on local health services, especially for patients needing higher-level care.
