BBC News reported that Ryan Gosling is set to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider, with the announcement made during a surprise segment at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. Marvel said Gosling will play the title character in a new film planned for release in 2028. On stage, the actor said the role was one he had wanted for a long time.

The project would be the third major Ghost Rider film, following the 2007 movie led by Nicolas Cage and the 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. In Marvel comics, Ghost Rider is commonly associated with Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stunt performer who becomes linked to the Spirit of Vengeance after a bargain involving the demon Mephisto.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige introduced the reveal, noting that he had frequently been asked when Gosling would join the MCU. The BBC said the actor had previously indicated interest in the character and had confirmed earlier this year that talks with Marvel were taking place.

The film is to be directed by Shawn Levy, who previously directed Deadpool & Wolverine and is also working with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter. The Comic-Con event also included other Marvel-related updates, including material from Avengers: Doomsday and word that Black Panther 3 is planned for 2028, underscoring Marvel’s effort to build anticipation for its next phase of releases.
