Rwenzururu Denies Mumbere Critically Ill

The Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu has moved to calm concern over the health of Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere Irema-Ngoma, dismissing social media claims that he is critically ill. In a statement reported by Nile Post, the kingdom said Mumbere is in Türkiye for a routine medical review and is travelling on advice from his doctors, urging the public not to panic.

The clarification comes days after the death of Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba-Iguru Rukidi IV, which intensified public attention on the wellbeing of traditional leaders in Uganda. The kingdom also thanked supporters for prayers and goodwill messages sent to Mumbere, the royal family and the institution.

According to the report, this is not Mumbere’s first medical trip abroad. He had earlier gone to Türkiye for specialised treatment and later returned to Uganda, before resuming travel for the latest review. The kingdom said the current visit is part of ordinary follow-up care at the same facility.

The update also lands against the backdrop of the long and often sensitive relationship between Rwenzururu and Tooro, two neighbouring cultural institutions with overlapping historical claims in the Rwenzori region. Mumbere’s leadership has also been shaped by past conflict and legal troubles, making any report about his health especially significant for subjects in Kasese and beyond.
