Russian attacks kill 7 in Ukraine as Kyiv targets gas plants deep in Arctic

Russian strikes across Ukraine killed at least seven people, according to Ukrainian officials, as Kyiv said it carried out one of its deepest drone attacks so far inside Russia. Al Jazeera reported that four people were killed in the southern Mykolaiv region and three others died in a strike on a shopping centre in Sumy in the northeast. Ukrainian authorities also said the attacks wounded more than a dozen people, including children in Sumy, and damaged both civilian and industrial sites in Mykolaiv.

On the Russian side, officials said Ukrainian drones reached the Yamal-Nenets region in the Arctic, roughly 2,800 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. The regional governor said debris from a drone caused a fire at an industrial site in Novy Urengoy, while Russian authorities said the attack was repelled. Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces later said they had hit gas-related facilities in the area, including plants they identified as Novy Urengoy and Purovsky, and described the operation as the deepest strike of the war.

The reported targets are part of Russia’s major gas industry in the Yamal region, which has been central to energy exports. The exchange underscores how both sides are using long-range drones to expand the war beyond the front line, with Ukraine increasingly striking Russian industrial infrastructure in response to sustained Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
