At least 27 people were killed and dozens more injured after an overnight Russian drone attack hit a warehouse in the Bucha district outside Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials cited by Al Jazeera. Kyiv regional governor Tymur Tkachenko said the death toll could rise, while among the confirmed dead was Taras Didych, the mayor of the village of Dmytrivska.

Officials said the strike caused a major fire and a series of explosions after the warehouse was hit near the village of Myla. Ukrainian prosecutors said they were investigating possible criminal negligence tied to the storage of explosive materials on the site, including whether the company involved had the proper permits and approvals. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the warehouse was struck and then detonated, adding that ammunition should not be stored close to homes or other residential areas.

Tkachenko said at least 50 residential buildings were damaged and more than 380 people were being evacuated from the area. The attack also injured 42 people, according to regional authorities. Al Jazeera reported that fires spread to nearby homes and a restaurant, and that the warehouse remained burning the following morning.

The incident came amid a wider exchange of long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine, which have increasingly hit civilian infrastructure and caused more casualties on both sides. Al Jazeera also reported separate deaths in Ukraine’s Odesa region and Boryspil, as well as fatalities in Russian regions after Ukrainian drone attacks.
