The move, announced by Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Monday, comes in direct response to Germany’s decision last week to shut two Russian diplomatic facilities after accusing Moscow of involvement in a failed drone attack near Leipzig/Halle Airport.

According to Al Jazeera, Moscow said Germany had triggered a new round of escalation and would be responsible for any consequences. Russia also instructed consulate staff and diplomats to leave the country by the same deadline. The shutdown follows a series of reciprocal measures: Germany previously closed Russia’s consulate general in Bonn and the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin, while Moscow ordered the closure of German-affiliated Goethe-Institut branches in Russia.

The latest action marks another low point in relations between Berlin and Moscow, which have sharply deteriorated since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Al Jazeera reported that Germany remains one of Ukraine’s largest European backers, providing substantial civilian and military assistance, while Russian officials continue to condemn Western support for Kyiv.
