Russia and Ukraine trade attacks, killing 10, including child in Chernihiv

Al Jazeera, citing Ukrainian officials, reported that Russian attacks killed at least six people in Ukraine on Sunday, including a nine-year-old girl at a supermarket in the northern city of Chernihiv. Ukraine’s air force said Russia fired seven ballistic missiles and launched 136 drones overnight, with Kyiv, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv among the cities struck.

In Chernihiv, officials said a drone hit the supermarket, killing two people and injuring 25. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike on the store. Local officials also reported one death and 16 people needing medical care after a drone attack in Kharkiv, while the governor of Zaporizhzhia said a glide bomb killed one person and wounded six. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said an apartment building caught fire after the missile attack, and three people were wounded. Naftogaz said two of its employees were killed in Sloviansk while assisting residents after an earlier strike.

Russian-installed authorities in occupied Donetsk, meanwhile, said four civilians were killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on Horlivka. The Russian-installed mayor also said a later drone strike hit an emergency vehicle, injuring medics and another resident. Russian authorities separately reported at least 12 injuries, including two children, in a Ukrainian drone attack on Belgorod, near the border.

The latest exchanges underscore the widening civilian toll of Russia’s war in Ukraine, which began with Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Al Jazeera reported that both sides deny targeting civilians, while United Nations figures show civilian casualties have risen in 2026 amid heavier use of drones, glide bombs and infrastructure strikes. U.S.-led efforts to halt the fighting remain stalled.
