Russia and North Korea deepen relations with symbolic road bridge

Al Jazeera reports that Russia and North Korea have opened their first road bridge, a two-lane crossing over the Tumen River that is intended to strengthen transport and trade ties between the two countries. The bridge links the two sides by road for the first time, complementing existing air and rail connections, and started carrying cargo trucks immediately after the opening on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae-song joined the ceremony by video link. Russian officials said the bridge could eventually handle up to 300 vehicles a day and be connected to Russia’s federal road network. The Russian government also said the structure could be fully operational later this year and, if plans proceed, opened to passenger traffic as well.

The bridge’s opening comes after years of discussion and follows a 2024 agreement reached during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea. According to Al Jazeera, the project is being presented by both governments as a milestone in a relationship that has deepened significantly since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The report places the new crossing near the older “Friendship Bridge,” a rail link that long served as the main border connection. It also notes that North Korea has sent troops to Russia’s Kursk region, underscoring how the two governments have expanded cooperation amid Russia’s isolation from many Western countries and North Korea’s long-standing sanctions and diplomatic constraints.
