Runaway Suspect Dies After Mob Attack

Police in Kassanda District have opened a murder investigation after a 30-year-old suspect died following an apparent mob assault and police rescue. The man, identified as Derrick Kasumba, also known as Kalevu, had been held at Manyogaseka Sub-county Police Station on allegations of burglary and theft while police awaited sanctioning of charges.

According to the Nile Post report, Kasumba escaped from custody on August 23, 2026, while being escorted to the toilet. Police said the officer on guard did not stop him. About an hour later, officers received information that he had been intercepted and beaten by a mob in Lwenyange Village, in Kassanda District.

Wamala Region police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said an officer was sent to recover the suspect. Police found the mob assaulting him, and the crowd reportedly fled when the officer arrived. Kasumba was taken back to the station, but his condition worsened. He was moved to Kyansaswa Health Centre III, where he was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later.

Police said the body was taken for a postmortem at Mityana General Hospital as investigations continue. They are seeking people suspected of taking part in the assault and have also warned against mob justice and attempts to escape lawful custody. More broadly, mob justice remains a recurring concern in Uganda, where police frequently urge the public to hand suspects over to authorities rather than take action themselves.
