Royals emerge from Tardis to begin Commonwealth Games opening ceremony

Dpa reported that King Charles III and Queen Camilla opened their role in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games ceremony with a theatrical entrance inspired by Doctor Who. At the start of the event at the Hydro arena in Glasgow on July 23, 2026, the royal couple appeared from the Tardis, the programme’s time-travelling police box, after it was shown in a filmed sequence touring Scottish landmarks and arriving at Balmoral Castle before materializing on stage.

The opening ceremony marked the start of an 11-day Commonwealth sporting event. According to dpa, more than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories are due to compete in 10 sports and six Para sports. The pre-show included appearances by the unicorn mascot Finnie and Scottish wrestler Grado, who appeared in a teacake costume. Cycling champion Chris Hoy and actor Greg McHugh were shown piloting the Tardis, with Seventh Doctor actor Sylvester McCoy also featuring in the segment.

Charles and Camilla walked from the onstage set to the royal box. Dpa said Charles was expected to formally open the Games in his capacity as Head of the Commonwealth, the ceremonial leader of the 56-member association. Earlier, he attended a reception with baton bearers from Commonwealth regions. Andy Burnham, Marie-France Van Heel, Scottish First Minister John Swinney and Prince Edward were also reported to have attended.

Dpa placed the entrance in a tradition of royal appearances at major sporting and national events, recalling Queen Elizabeth II’s filmed James Bond sequence for the London 2012 Olympics and her later Platinum Jubilee sketch with Paddington Bear.
