Rotary launches Shs190m WASH project at Kazo school

The Rotary Club of Nkumba has started a Shs190 million water, sanitation and hygiene project at Kanoni Model Primary School in Kanoni Sub-county, Kazo District, according to Nile Post. The initiative is aimed at easing sanitation pressures at the school and improving access to safe water for more than 700 pupils, as well as teachers and nearby residents.

The project is set to include a four-stance pit latrine for boys, a four-stance latrine with washrooms for girls, a two-stance latrine for teachers, and a water source for the school and surrounding community. Nile Post reported that the school has long relied mainly on rainwater and a nearby well during dry periods, while existing latrines have been heavily overstretched.

Headteacher Perez Mweshezi said the shortage of facilities has left one latrine stance serving more than 120 pupils and raised concerns about contaminated water from the nearby well. She said the completed project would improve hygiene and create a healthier learning environment.

Rotary Club president Godfrey Bisingwa Wamono urged the school and community to take ownership of the facilities once finished. Kazo Senior Education Officer Robert Itakatahire and district vice chairperson Fred Ntungire both described the project as timely, saying it would support government efforts and help maintain a better learning environment. The development matters because sanitation and safe water remain key to child health, attendance and school performance, especially in under-resourced rural schools.
