Rotary Launches Malaria Elimination Campaign on Buyiga Island

What the report says
The Rotary Club of Rubaga Lakeview has launched a malaria-focused campaign on Buyiga Island in Mpigi District, Uganda, as part of a broader effort to improve health and community services in the hard-to-reach island area. The initiative, led by Rotary District 9214 Governor Daniel Mukasa Damulira, was introduced during a two-day medical camp that offered residents malaria screening, treatment, medicines and other basic healthcare support.
Nile Post reported that Buyiga Island has more than 35,000 residents and faces major challenges in accessing medical care, with malaria identified as a persistent concern, especially for pregnant women and young children. During the outreach, Rotary also trained Village Health Teams on malaria prevention and distributed bicycles to help health workers move around the island more effectively and reach more households.
The campaign builds on nearly a decade of Rotary activity on Buyiga, where the group has supported health, education and local development projects. In addition to the health services, the outreach included donations of scholastic materials to schools, student guidance sessions, and support for classroom construction at Buyiga Seed Secondary School, which is reported to be at foundation stage. The effort reflects a longer-term push to combine disease prevention with education and infrastructure support in a community with limited access to government services.
