The Hollywood Reporter says the 2026 Venice Film Festival lineup, announced Thursday, brings a high-profile slate to the Lido for the 83rd Biennale. Artistic director Alberto Barbera’s selection includes expected appearances by Robert Pattinson, Penélope Cruz, Alicia Vikander and Oasis members Noel and Liam Gallagher, alongside new work from Martin McDonagh, Werner Herzog, Hirokazu Koreeda, Lee Chang-dong, Nanni Moretti and Florian Zeller.

Among the main competition titles, McDonagh returns with “Wild Horse Nine,” a Film4-backed black comedy starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell as CIA veterans sent to Easter Island before the 1973 Chilean coup. Zeller’s “Bunker,” starring Javier Bardem and Cruz, follows a couple strained by a billionaire’s bunker commission, while Pattinson stars in and produces Lance Oppenheim’s “Primetime,” about NBC’s Chris Hansen and the “To Catch a Predator” phenomenon.

Other competition entries cited by THR include Herzog’s “Bucking Fastard,” with Rooney and Kate Mara; May el-Toukhy’s post-World War II drama “Woman Unknown”; Andrea Pallaoro’s “The Echo Chamber,” adapted from a final screenplay by Bernardo Bertolucci and starring Vikander; Moretti’s “It Will Happen Tonight”; Koreeda’s manga adaptation “Look Back”; and Lee’s Netflix-backed “Possible Love.” THR notes el-Toukhy is the only woman among 20 competition directors, raising renewed questions about gender representation.

The festival will open Sept. 2 with Danny Boyle’s “Ink,” about Rupert Murdoch’s British tabloid empire, and close Sept. 12 with Giovanni Veronesi’s “Dio Ride.” Out-of-competition nonfiction highlights include Alex Gibney’s nearly four-hour Elon Musk documentary and “Oasis: Don’t Look Back In Anger,” about the band’s 2025 reunion tour.
