Rivian R2 uses up to 26% more energy than Model Y in real-world test - Electrek

Electrek reported that a real-world comparison by Out of Spec Reviews found the Rivian R2 Performance consumed significantly more energy than a Tesla Model Y Performance, even though both electric SUVs carry the same EPA combined efficiency rating of 105 MPGe, or 32 kWh per 100 miles. The test, published July 27, compared the vehicles on the same afternoon over shared routes and found the R2 used about 18% to 26% more energy at every tested speed.

According to Electrek, the EPA figures show the R2 ahead in city efficiency and range, while the Model Y has a slight highway-cycle edge. The article notes that EPA EV ratings can come from different approved testing paths, and Out of Spec’s Kyle Conner suggested Rivian and Tesla may have used different approaches, though he said he could not verify that. Electrek also emphasized that EPA kWh-per-100-mile figures include charging losses, while Out of Spec measured energy leaving the battery.

Out of Spec’s procedure included matching tire pressures, similar cabin settings, two occupants in each vehicle, out-and-back loops at GPS-measured speeds, and swapping lead positions to reduce drafting effects. Electrek said the R2 used 18.4% more energy at 50 mph, about 26% more at 60 mph, about 20% more at 70 mph, and 26.5% more at 80 mph. A stop-and-go city-style loop also favored the Model Y.

The report also found a strength for Rivian: fast charging. In Out of Spec’s 10% Challenge, the R2 added 48.3 kWh in 15 minutes at an IONNA site in North Carolina, averaging 193 kW. Electrek framed the results as evidence that vehicle shape and highway efficiency still matter, while noting the R2 may offer more traditional SUV utility than the Model Y.
