The Independent Uganda reports that Tooro Kingdom completed the traditional rites marking the end of mourning for the late King Oyo and the installation of King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I in Fort Portal, western Uganda. On Monday night, the king-designate joined a ceremonial procession through the city, entered Karuziika Palace, and took part in rituals that symbolized the start of a new reign.

According to the report, the sequence included a symbolic mock battle at the Mugabante gate, the spearing of a bull, and the turning upright of royal regalia such as drums and spears. The palace’s lion statues, which had been covered during the mourning period, were also uncovered. Nyabongo, who had been receiving cultural orientation in Bunyangabu District, moved from a private residence to Rwengoma Palace before the overnight procession to Karuziika.

The paper says the formal coronation as the 14th Omukama of Tooro was scheduled for Tuesday at Karuziika Palace, beginning with a church service at St John’s Cathedral, with President Yoweri Museveni expected as chief guest. The event drew large crowds in Fort Portal, where residents lined the streets to see the new king. The report frames the succession as a significant moment for the kingdom as it resumes normal ceremonial life after the mourning period.
